How Do I Ask My Boss For A Promotion - Ask Me Anything IM HIRED

How Do I Ask My Boss For A Promotion - Ask Me Anything If You Dont Ask, You Dont Get If you are looking for a promotion you need to be able to prove that you deserve to take that next step of your career. In an ideal world your manager would appraise your work regularly and let you know when they feel you are ready for that promotion, but that isnt always how it works. You need to demonstrate that you are in charge of your own self development and you need to be proactive in securing your own promotion. So where are you supposed to begin? Firstly, you need to stop tell everyone in the office youre ready for bigger and better things before you even sit down for an initial conversation with your manager. Although tempting, dont let your manager be the last one to know. Arrange a Sit Down Hopefully, you will have regular one to ones so you can tie this conversation into your next meeting but if you dont then you need to be speaking with your line manager and setting up a time/date when you can sit down privately to discuss your progression plan. In the sit down meeting you should be expressing your interest in new opportunities and showing your willingness to take on new challenges. However, dont expect too much. It would be brilliant if your manager turned round and offered you a better job then and there but it is more likely that they are going to give you the steps you need to take to make it happen. Take On Feedback and Prove Performance To get a promotion you need to show you can take on board feedback and demonstrate that you can action it. You need to take charge of your own development and be logging your own performance. Dont just rely on your manager to track your KPIs. Instead make a simple log of your weekly achievements, any feedback you have been given from other colleagues or management and have evidence to demonstrate how youre improving. Get Yourself Noticed for all the Right Reasons When going for a promotion, it is a good idea for more than just your office bestie to realise how great you are at your job. The best way to do this is to network around the office and try and get involved in projects or committees. By doing this you are expanding your network but you are also then able to ask those people for feedback on your work and be able to gather references from them. The more people who can see you achieving in your role, the more likely your manager and the decision makers will realise this too. Getting a promotion is all about being proactive and being focused on enhancing your own career. Remember to read my blog on How to Get Yourself a Promotion for more guidance on the sit down meeting and how you can be gathering information that will make it hard for your employer to say no to your promotion.

Self Promotion Showcase Your Accomplishments Without Bragging

Self Promotion Showcase Your Accomplishments Without Bragging Your middle name is Reliable. You come in early, stay late and never stop until the job is doneand done well. Unfortunately, these things wont help you progress in your career one bit if no one notices. So how do you get people to notice the work youre doing? If the idea of self-promotion gives you the heebie jeebies, consider these ways to make it easier and let your light shine brightTalk about what you loveWhen you talk about what youre good at, you may appear calculated or worse, conceited. Talking about what you love or enjoy about your work, on the otzu sich hand, will usually showcase the saatkorn achievements while allowing you to relax and get personal. Think about your answer to Why are you a good friend? versus What are the kinds of things you enjoy doing for your friends? Even reading these two questions, you probably went from a pensive, thoughtful expression to a smile. Youll do the same when talking about yo ur accomplishments. When you talk about the things you love, youll naturally light up and show a mora authentic side of yourself. To avoid sounding like youre humble bragging, talk about your desire to bring more of the thing you love into your work. For example, when a project is over, share what you loved about that project and your role, and also share how you hope to do more of that type of work in the future or how excited you are for a specific project on the horizon.Share others praiseCreate a folder to make note of your accomplishments and all of the kind praise youve received from others. Youll find that you receive more recognition and compliments than you think, and in your next wertzuwachs review or catch-up meeting with your boss, you can share not only what youve enjoyed, but also the fact that others appreciated your work as well. Share details of a recent project, why it was a success, and the feedback you received from others during the process. Let others promote y our great workPay it forwardYou know those messages youre saving? Start sending them, too. When you notice what others are doing well or appreciate a thoughtful or helpful act someone has done, share it. Too often we think nice thoughts about someone and never tell them. I recently received an email from a former colleague sharing that she kept a card I gave her in her laptop case because it made her smile whenever she saw it. She didnt have to share that story, but she did and it absolutely made my day and reminded me how fantastic she is. How could you make someones day?Start connectingReally listen to others to binnensee how you can support them. It might be something you can do yourself, but oftentimes, it will be an introduction to someone else. Do you have a friend who is looking for a recruiter and another friend who is a recruiter? Connecting them and creating a mutually beneficial relationship means that you now have two people who will forever sing your praises for bringin g them together. Make connections in a thoughtful way and check in to see how things are going.Keep in touchThe real reason for self-promotion is to stay at the forefront of peoples minds when an opportunity arises. So make a point of keeping in touch. If you see an article that a former colleague would appreciate, send it over. If someones company wins an award, send a congratulatory note. Follow up in ways that make it easy for people to respond and dont include a list of asks. That way when you do reach out to ask for something, people are used to hearing from you and see you as a person who continually provides value. How did that happen? Were at the end of a list of ideas to self-promote and there was no mention of shouting your achievements from the rooftops, bragging, name dropping, or stepping on other peoples toes. When the time comes and an opportunity is before you, you should absolutely boldly ask for what you want and deserve. Consistently promoting yourself in ways that feel authentic using the methods outlined here will make it a lot easier for people to say yes when you ask.________________Alyson Garrido ispassionate about helping women advance their careers and findjobs they will enjoy. Will All Workers Need a Degree To Land a Job in 2020

Will All Workers Need a Degree To Land a Job in 2020 With education costs rising dramatically in the UK recently and already being high and rising in the U.S., many of the more financially challenged will be seriously considering whether it is possible to bedrngnis only land a job but have a successful career without having a degree. Of course, there are many massively successful business people who dont have degrees such as Bill Gates, the late Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, Michael Dell, Duskin Moskovitz (Facebook founder), Pete Cashmore (Mashable Founder), David Karp (Tumblr), and the list goes on. But, lets not kid ourselves these people are exceptions who didnt land jobs but created them. The reality is that 21 percent of all jobs and an even higher percentage of career jobs need a degree in todays climate. According to research by Georgetown University, by 2020, 24 percent of all jobs are expec ted to require a bachelors degree. This means that on an aggregated basis, 47 percent of jobs will require some form of degree (associates, bachelors or masters), and if a job seeker is looking to land a serious career job in 2020 he or she will need to have some form of degree. And any job seeker who currently holds an associates or bachelors degree, might want to consider upgrading his or her degree to the next level available to remain competitive in the job market. This is a summary of the Georgetown University Report findings on 2020 degree requirements for a job6.6 million (or 12 percent of all jobs) will need less than high school education13.2 million (24 percent) will need only a high school diploma9.8 million (18 percent) will need some college experience (no degree)6.6 million (12 percent) will require an associate degree13.2 million (24 percent) will require a bachelors degree6.0 million, (11 percent) will require a masters degree or better. So, it does appear that workers will need at least an associates degree to land their dream job and climb the career ladder to success in 2020. Of course, there are some caveats as shown by the SMB Wellness study 2013, reported by Forbes, which showed that 50 percent of small businesses had hired staff that didnt have a college degree and 62 percent had not experienced any difference in performance between graduates and non-graduates. This means that if non-graduates focus their career around small businesses and stay away from large corporates and governmental organizations they may still find it reasonably practicable to land a career job in 2020 even though they dont have a degree. But, its pretty clear that if workers want to have the full access to the job market in 2020 and maximize their chance of career success, they will need a degree. This does not mean that there are no other alternatives to the degree route to a career. As I showed before, there is an army of successful entrepreneurs without a degree who have succeeded based on their skills experience alone. And while the average entrepreneur may not mimic the success of Zuckerberg and co., there is a growing marketplace for freelancers, contractors and entrepreneurs where there is far more emphasis on ability to deliver than there is on education.
